2006 - EARLY TRAVEL INFORMATION FOR GCO APPLICANTS
GCO volunteers will meet in Sarajevo for training and orientation
When making travel plans to the Balkans, keep in mind the following:
1. Generally, there are no direct flights from the US to Sarajevo. You will need to put together an itinerary that takes you to a major European city (London, Frankfurt, Paris, Rome, Zurich, Brussels etc) and then connects to Sarajevo. Air travel is the best options for getting to Sarajevo from major connecting cities in Europe. However, another option is to fly into Dubrovnik or Split, large and lovely coastal towns in Croatia, and take a bus (about a 6 hour trip) to Sarajevo from either of these cities. Flights, ferries and buses have schedules that vary, depending on the day of the week, so when considering travel, check schedules carefully and verify with an agent. If you need an agent, we can suggest:
Meri Svircic
Adriatic Travel
1(800) 262-1718 ext. 104 or (310) 548-1446 ext. 104e-mail: meris@adriatictours.com
2. There is an International Arts Festival in Dubrovnik every summer, generally starting about July 10 running until August 20. If you plan to travel through Dubrovnik before or after camp, we suggest you make your airline plans AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, and reserve lodging in advance. Rooms in youth hostels and hotels can be difficult to find at the last minute.
3. You are responsible for making arrangements for personal travel before or after camp.
4. If accepted, you will be assigned a mentor, someone who has been at a GCO camp and is returning to camp this year. Your mentor might know a good deal about the range of travel options, and if they do not, they will direct you to someone who can.
